Who Makes What

The encyclopedia of who actually makes car parts. Every profile is verified from a real supplier page or confirmed manufacturer knowledge — no guessing, no invented entries. Search a company, a product, or filter by category.

The Supply-Chain Matrix: Who Makes What, and Where

Most aftermarket parts are designed in one country, forged or cast in another, machined in a third, and finished in a fourth. That is normal global manufacturing — not a secret. This page documents what brands state about their production and what public records (customs manifests, company reports, trade rulings) show, so you can read origin claims the way professionals do: claim by claim, document by document.

How to read this matrix

  • Company statement — what the brand itself says about where its products are made. Treated as the company's claim, not as independent fact.
  • Public record — what verifiable documents show: customs manifests, the company's own published reports, or government rulings. Each entry cites its source below.
  • Reading — the objective takeaway. Observations are kept separate from inferences, and inferences are labeled as such.

The matrix

Aftermarket brands: stated production vs. public records (September 2026)
Brand Category What the company states What public records show Objective reading
HRE Performance Wheels Forged wheels All forged wheels made at its Vista, California facility; forgings, rim parts, bolts and packaging "all made in the USA"; only the FlowForm line (Japan) and Carbon Series barrels (Germany) are made elsewhere. [S1] Company president: every wheel "starts with forged aluminum blanks" (~100 lb each) that are lathe-turned and CNC-machined. [S2] Motor Trend documented the 60,000 sq ft TÜV-approved Vista facility and the blank-to-machining process. [S3] Forged wheel blanks are a globally traded commodity — e.g. a December 2024 manifest lists "blanks of vehicle wheels made of aluminum alloys… intended for subsequent production" moving internationally. [S4] No brand-specific blank-import manifest is cited here; see the case study below for how that verification works. The documented process is: forged blank → US machining, finishing, assembly. "Made in USA" describes where the machining and finishing happen; the blank is the raw input to that process. Where any given blank is forged is a separate, checkable fact — see "The blank question."
Forgeline Motorsports Forged wheels Designed, engineered and manufactured in Dayton, Ohio; 3-piece wheel components produced in-house on the same machinery as its race wheels. [S5] Base metal: 6061-T6 aluminum forged on a 6,000-ton hydraulic press in California — described as "100 percent American-made." [S6] Forgeline openly states its Carbon+Forged series uses carbon-fiber barrels supplied by British manufacturer Dymag, assembled in Dayton. [S7] For its Flow Formed F01 line, the company states it is "100% designed and engineered" in Dayton and "manufactured by our performance and quality proven partner" — the partner and its country are not named in that statement. [S8] A brand can be transparent about one supply relationship (Dymag) and silent about another (the flow-form partner) at the same time. The undisclosed item is a gap, not evidence of anything — it is simply unverified either way.
Borla Exhaust systems Systems "designed from scratch" at its R&D center in Oxnard, California and "manufactured in the United States" at its facility in Johnson City, Tennessee, from T-304 stainless steel. [S9] Company boilerplate in racing press materials repeats the Johnson City, TN manufacturing base and "American-made" positioning. [S10] No contrary manufacturing-origin record was found in this review. Stated and observed information agree: US design + US manufacturing from stainless raw material. Raw-material origin (where the T-304 steel is milled) is not stated — normal for the industry.
Brembo Brakes Italian company headquartered in Curno, Italy; markets itself on Italian engineering and motorsport heritage. The company's own 2023 sustainability report lists manufacturing sites in Italy, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the UK, Brazil, Mexico, the USA, China (Nanjing, Langfang, Jiaxing, Qingdao, Jinan) and India. [S11] A heritage brand manufacturing on four continents, including China, by its own disclosure. "Italian brand" and "globally manufactured" are both true at once — brand nationality and factory location are different facts.
Akrapovič Exhaust systems Slovenian company; production concentrated in Slovenia. MotoGP's own profile: "the entire production process, from tube making to final assembly, takes place at Črnomelj," with HQ and racing department at Ivančna Gorica; 1,400+ employees across two Slovenian sites. [S12] A titanium foundry opened at the Ivančna Gorica factory in 2009. [S13] One of the clearest single-country manufacturing footprints in the aftermarket. Vertical integration (own foundry, in-house tube making) is the documented differentiator.

Case study: the forged blank question

Premium forged-wheel brands publish a process that is consistent across the industry: start with a forged aluminum blank, then lathe-turn, CNC-machine, finish and assemble. HRE's president described exactly this on the 2013 SEMA show floor [S2], and trade press has documented the same blank-to-machine workflow at the company's Vista facility [S3].

The educational point is about the blank itself. A forged blank is a traded industrial input: manifests describe them as "blanks of vehicle wheels made of aluminum alloys… intended for subsequent production" [S4], and US Customs has ruled that a wheel blank forged in China retains China as its country of origin even when it is machined or finished in another country — because the forging gives the blank "the shape and character of the wheel" and its use is predetermined [S15].

So when a brand states that its wheels are made in one country while public discussion focuses on whether its blanks are imported, the two statements are about different stages of production. Both can be true simultaneously: imported blank, domestic machining. The checkable question is always: who forged the blank, and what does the import record list as the importer of record? That is answered with a manifest lookup, not with marketing copy — see the worked example below.

Forged vs. flow-formed vs. cast — what the words mean

Forged
A solid billet or blank of aluminum (typically 6061-T6) is pressed under extreme force (thousands of tons), aligning the metal's grain structure. Highest strength-to-weight ratio; the blank is then CNC-machined into the final wheel. Most expensive process.
Flow-formed
A cast wheel face is heated and spun while rollers stretch and compress the barrel, thinning it and aligning the grain — a middle ground between cast and forged in strength, weight and cost. Note: the starting point is still a casting.
Cast (gravity / low-pressure)
Molten aluminum is poured or forced into a mold. Least expensive; heavier and more brittle than forged. The vast majority of OEM and budget aftermarket wheels are cast.
"Forged from imported blank"
Not a fourth process — it is the forged process with a global supply chain: the forging happens in one country, the machining in another. The engineering (grain alignment, heat treatment, machining tolerances) is what determines quality, not the passport of the press.

How to read a shipping manifest (worked example)

The example below is illustrative — a teaching model showing which fields matter, not a real brand's record. Real entries in the matrix above always cite their source.

Illustrative manifest record (teaching model — not a real shipment)
Importer of recordEXAMPLE WHEEL CO LLC, Vista, CA
Exporter / shipperEXAMPLE FORGING WORKS, Jiangsu, China
Product description"Forged aluminum wheel blanks, 6061-T6, unfinished — for further machining"
Quantity / unit500 PCS
Country of originChina
Date rangeJan 2023 – Dec 2024 (12 shipments)
  1. Importer of record ≠ brand name. Search the registered LLC, parent company, or warehouse entity (e.g. a wheel brand owned by a larger group may import under the parent's name). Match by company address, not just brand name.
  2. Read the product description literally. "Forged aluminum wheel blanks" and "finished aluminum wheels" are different products at different production stages. Do not conflate them.
  3. Count shipments, not headlines. One shipment proves one shipment. A pattern across 12+ months suggests an ongoing supply relationship (inference — label it as such).
  4. Check the date range. Old manifests describe old supply chains. Companies change suppliers; always timestamp your findings.

Why this validates factory-direct buying

The matrix above documents a simple industrial fact: the processes that make a wheel strong — forging 6061-T6 aluminum, heat treatment, precision CNC machining — are globally available industrial processes, and the materials are globally traded commodities. A forging press in one country produces the same grain-aligned 6061-T6 as a forging press in another when the alloy spec, forging pressure, heat treatment and machining tolerances are the same.

What premium brands add on top of those shared industrial inputs is real and specific: original design and engineering, tight quality control, finishing craftsmanship, warranties, and accountability. Those are the things a price premium actually buys — and they are the right things to compare when you shop.

Buying factory-direct means paying for the manufacturing without paying for the brand layer on top. The quality question is never "which country" — it is "which alloy, which process, which tolerances, and who verifies them." Ask those four questions of any supplier, branded or factory-direct, and you will buy well.

Methodology: what a manifest shows — and what it doesn't

  • A manifest shows: importer of record, exporter, product description as declared, quantity and unit, declared value, ports, and dates. These are the facts. Cite them with the manifest ID and date range.
  • A manifest doesn't show: what happened to the goods after import (machining, finishing, assembly), what share of a brand's total production a shipment represents, or product quality.
  • Interpretation rules we follow: a port is not a factory; "cartons" are not "pieces" (check the quantity unit); one shipment is not a whole production line; a company statement is a claim until a document corroborates it; an inference is always labeled as one.
  • Corrections: if a brand provides documentation that updates any entry, the entry will be updated with the new source cited. Spot an error? Contact us — every correction is published with its evidence.
